Swashbuckling in the city -- what could possibly go wrong?

A dozen brave souls decked out in full fighting regalia took a stab at the graceful, centuries-old sport of fencing on the New York Public Library's outdoor terrace yesterday.

The first in a series of free Friday lessons by the Manhattan Fencing Center saw curious novices and more refined experts trade blows and duck darts before an appreciative Midtown crowd.

"I'm really surprised they allowed us to use real swords in the middle of New York City," said novice Stefani Dixon, 23, of Bushwick, Brooklyn. "I had never heard of fencing, but it seemed like an Old World European boy's-club thing, so it appealed to me."
